Fire and Smoke Damper (FSD) and Smoke Control Systems (SCS) professionals are properly and thoroughly trained to inspect, test, maintain and repair fire and smoke dampers according to requirements in National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Codes and Standards, helping to ensure that these crucial life safety features will work in an emergency.

The National Energy Management Institute (NEMI) advocates for fire life safety ordinances across the country that require building owners to use a certified, skilled and trained workforce to conduct the periodic inspections of fire and smoke dampers according to requirements in NFPA Codes and Standards.

NEMI provides educational seminars to Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), firefighters, fire life safety design professionals and public officials. Seminars are offered at no cost for attendees and conducted at state-of-the-art training centers maintained jointly by the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation (SMART) workers and Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ Association (SMACNA). Each seminar attendee receives a Certificate of Completion that identifies Continuing Education Units earned for their participation.
